A typical Sudoku puzzle
Towards the end of 2005 it seemed as if the great Sudoku puzzle was about to take over the whole World. Every newspaper, magazine, Internet site and bus shelter (almost) seemed to be hosting its own version of the puzzle. Book shops were (and still are) chocked to the roofspace with hundreds of books devoted to the cunning logic puzzles.

It was only inevitable that the celebrities soon got in on the act. Carol Vorderman, naturally... but surely it cannot be long before Les Dennis, Jade, or Christine Hamilton produce their own personal books of Sudoku advice.

How not to lose

There are really only two ways to 'lose' with a Sudoku puzzles:

  1. You can either fail to complete one - usually in public - and be embarrassed at your ineptitude (after all Sudoku is a puzzle based on logic and strategy, its not like picking lottery numbers, luck doesn't really come into it).
  1. You can fall for one of those internet advertisements that are close to being scams: the ones advertising a Sudoku system that enables anyone to complete a puzzle in minutes (usually for $5.99).

Lukily, both 'problems' have a related solution. It IS possible to follow a series of rules to solve a Sudoku puzzle (the advertisements are right!). However, no cost is involved. Please - the only way to really lose here is to lose that $5.99 (or more). You don't need to buy anything. The information is available for free... and, most importantly, it is the same information, for example:

  • "sudoku.org" offer an extensive Solving Sudoku document in Adobe PDF format that is suitable for beginners;
  • "sudokusolver.co.uk" offers clear step-by-step explanations to solve any puzzle by the application of logic;
  • "nicoli.co.jp" offers a range of tutorials and advice. Nicoli, is the originating site/publisher of the Sudoku range of puzzles.
